M12 Spoiler Legacy Preview

Core sets having new cards means new ideas for Legacy! M12 seems particularly interesting for Legacy with its fixed Ancestral Recall, Abeyance on a stick, and Angel's Mercy (hey, I had to continue the words starting with “A” theme...). Let's jump in at take a look at the new cards!

Commander Spoiler Legacy Preview

Legacy is an efficient format filled with spells of converted mana cost (cmc) 4 and below. In Legacy, cards with high cmc usually don't get played. The Commander/EDH format is the exact opposite as players cast big splashy spells all the time. Thus, most commander cards don't fit into Legacy format unless they can be cheated into play somehow (Show and Tell, Natural Order, Reanimate etc). Even so, they face stiff competition (Emrakul, Iona). Most of the 51 new cards in Commander are unlikely to see play in Legacy, but there are some possible plays in here. Let's run down the list of new cards one by one and see what I mean.

New Phyrexia is upon us in about 1 month and we're all excited what new cards there will be. At the point of writing, 24 cards have already been spoiled on MtgSalvation and some of them showed potential for Legacy use. Before we go into single card discussion, let's set some expectations. Mirrodin Besieged Legacy Preview

The 2nd of the 2nd Mirrodin cycle, Mirrodin Besieged is filled with interesting cards that are spread across all the different rarities. With a whole block dedicated to artifacts, I hope you had your Goblin Welders and Affinity deck ready. Here's some of the cards that struck me:

[Brainstorming] Scars of Mirrodin in Legacy – A Fundamental Shift in Stax

First there was Nevinyral's Disk, giving decks everywhere a chance to reset the board. Then came Powder Keg, a cheaper but more restrictive way to remove irritating artifacts and creatures in mono blue decks. With Mirrodin came Engineered Explosives, giving Pernicious Deed to multicolour decks lacking black green. Scars of Mirrodin brought us the new and improved Ratchet Bomb which now removes all threats from Aether Vial and Counterbalance to Tarmogoyf and Jace, the Mind Sculptor. I expect this to be a big boost to Ancient Tomb decks.

Scars of Mirrodin absolutely excites me! Just like Mirrodin brought Chalice of the Void, Trinisphere, and Crucible of Worlds to make Stax a legitimate deck, Scars promises to at least add on to or even revamp artifact heavy decks in Legacy. As of the point when this article is written, close to a third of Scars has been spoiled and there are some cards that are sure to make an impact on Legacy.
